This week my student and I went on a mini road trip an drive an hour to visit the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum.
We actually got the passes from our local library, so there was no admission. Check your local libraries to see if they offer anything similar.
After making him actually work some math problems, we got an earliyish start. The driving time gave us a chance to talk and I got updated on the latest shows and cartoons he’s been watching.
We were both very excited to go to this particular museum. For him it was the hopes of seeing an actual kamikaze plane…for me it was the chance to see Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose. One of us was disappointed, as there was no kamikaze plane…but, the disappointment passed when we realized how exactly do you see a kamikaze plane, unless it was wreckage.
As far as the Spruce Goose…Wow. Simply, WOW! I could not believe the magnitude of the size if this plane. Unreal. There are a few shots below, but there was no way my little iPhone was going to do it justice. When you see the number of planes that are house below just one wing, then you begin to get an idea.
So after touring for awhile, we started to lose a little steam and still had the Space Museum side to see. We decided that since it was the same size as the Aviation Museum, we would save it for a future date.
Overall it was a great afternoon and we both learned a lot of new info. He wants me to now teach him to make paper airplanes. I better start practicing again. 🙂
